In Conversation with Niki Kamdar, a fashion designer turned baker and founder of Niki’s Bake Stop!
Niki Kamdar is a multi-talented professional and a full-time mother to two lovely daughters. She is an expert baker and successful fashion designer.
- Tell us a little about yourself and your previous working experience?
My name is Niki Kamdar. I am a full-time mother to two loving daughters and a Fashion Designer by profession. I have done my fashion designing from FIDM Los Angeles and I have also designed for several TV shows initially. After the birth of my daughters and due to time restraints and minimal support, I stopped working for a very long time. Later, I resumed my career in fashion designing by customizing clothes for my clients on a one-on-one basis.
- How was the idea of ‘Niki’s Bake Stop’ born?
When the pandemic struck it affected my designing work. Also, I have always been this person who loves to cook for family and friends. Thus, I started experimenting with a lot of variety of food. Soon after, I had friends and family impressed by my baking skills and started coaxing me to take it up as a side profession! After a few months of pondering, I thought it was an interesting idea and with the support of my loved ones, my idea of Niki’s Bake-stop was born.
- What is the concept of ‘Niki’s Bake Stop’?
The concept is to find a one stop solution to satiate your baked cravings, be it sweet or savoury, there will be absolutely no compromise on quality and quantity offered.
- Who is the target audience of ‘Niki’s Bake Stop’?
The target audience is actually anyone and everyone who enjoys baked, sweet and savoury snacks. My intention is to cater to young kids as five years to elders as seventy-five years old. Anyone who enjoys a good snack is my audience.
- With so many home bakers as your competition, how different is your menu and style of baking and the quality of ingredients that you use?
I have personally tried to come up with unique recipes and combinations in my menu. Also, it’s surprising that I have rarely come across home bakers who bake savoury bread from scratch. Thus, I have tried to come up with savoury and sweetbreads that are completely eggless and vegetarian. And, there is no compromise on any ingredients! Also, my pricing is very affordable.
- Tell us about your best-selling product and take us through the basic process of how it is baked and made?
There are quite a few snacks that top my list of hot favourites like the hot Margherita sub, the pesto bombs, artisanal focaccia, the Mexican bombs, the pistachio and rose whole wheat cake, the orange walnut coffee with chocolate, cinnamon rolls, cookies and much more. My personal favourite is the hot Margherita sub and cinnamon rolls. I must tell you that the process is very elaborate and each bread takes a minimum of three hours to bake. So be assured, that your order is baked to perfection with a lot of love and care.
- A start-up business can be majorly successful or dauntingly unsuccessful. How did you decide to take the plunge and chose to start your own business?
For starters, I did not think or take it up as a business. It is truly my passion to cook and feed people. So, turning your passion into a side business is a great idea with me having nothing to lose. In the end, I am happy that with the support of my daughters, family and friends, I took the plunge and the idea has been a great success. Also, I continue to design clothes for my clients. So, I am a baker at day and a designer by evening. Absolutely loving the adrenaline rush!
- Would you like to share some advice to budding start-ups or to someone that has a business idea and is contemplating it?
I would say, take the plunge! Do it with full compassion, put in your best and the universe will make it happen for you.
