In Conversation With Anisha Thakker, the master-mind and soul of V/Desi

  • Tell us a little about yourself and your previous working experience?

I have always known that I wanted to be a fashion designer since the young age of 13 years old! I enrolled in my first certificate course for fashion design when I was 16 years old and then there was no stopping! I just knew that I was headed in the right direction. Post high school, I got enrolled for a BSC in Fashion Design during which I indulged in an internship with a production house.

After completing my undergrad, I wanted to work with an established designer so as to attain practical experience as well as get a fair idea of my interests in a Master’s specialisation. I luckily found myself working with a Bollywood designer, successfully worked on multiple projects like renowned fashion shows and London Fashion Week. Through the process, I was lucky to be able to assist my designer with a few Bollywood movies like Robot 2 starring Rajnikant & Akshay Kumar; Great Grand Masti with costumes for Urvashi Rautela and quite a few more.

  • How was the idea of ‘V/Desi’ born?

The concept of V/Desi was born while I was studying Masters in Fashion Entrepreneurship in Milan. It actually came up as a project idea but my love for it had me keep the name and the concept followed by! V/Desi was launched in December 2017.

  • What is the concept of V/Desi?

As the name suggests, V/Desi is a combination of ‘Desi’ and ‘Videshi’; which means an amalgamation of cultures, silhouettes and embellishments from India and the western world. We have always loved experimenting with unique colour combinations & mixing different kinds of crafts and embroideries into our garments! For us, every outfit that we design and make is something that is very personal to us and comes with a story of its own.

  • Who is the target audience of V/Desi?

When we initially launched V/Desi, we were aiming at young and middle-aged women as our primary focus was Indo-Western clothing. However, as we grew as a brand, we started with Kid’s wear and now we are also into Men’s wear too! I think it is safe to say that you can comfortably call us a one-stop-shop for your whole family!

  • With several established traditional attire brands in the market – how successful do you think is the idea of introducing a new brand on a local level?

V/Desi was set up in 2017 and has been blooming as a brand since it is a very niche market. In Spite of having many established brands in the market, our specialty lies in catering to an audience that is interested in owning a designer outfit and having it designed from scratch with a personal taste too! That ideology has to give us an edge over most designer brands and retail outlets that primarily have only ready-made options.

  • Tell us a little about how your products are sourced, what is the quality quotient and a little about your ideas behind the costume’s design?

We have always sourced our materials, fabrics and accessories from all over the country! With such a diverse palate, the majority of our raw materials come in from Mumbai, Surat, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Delhi, Bangalore and many more cities. Our focus remains on sourcing high quality and interesting trims from their respective specialists.

As for our idea behind each costume, there has always been a greater focus towards creating something unique keeping in mind the requirements, personality, the occasion of the client. We make sure to work around our image as a brand and also have our client’s needs incorporated!

  • Would you mind sharing your financial investment and the turnover that you have earned?

Initially, I invested a few lakhs which included the machinery setup, raw materials that included fabrics, laces and other accessories and the salaries of my staff. Gradually as the requirement and demand increased, we had to pump in little more capital to keep up with more options in stock. By the end of this financial year, I am hopefully expecting to have achieved twice the turnover of my initial investment.

  • A start-up business can be majorly successful or dauntingly unsuccessful. How did you decide to take the plunge and chose to start your own business?

Entrepreneurship is all about taking some risk and being courageous and confident about what you want to do. It also requires foresight and planning. While we plan for the best, we must also be prepared for the worst.  The biggest teacher that can guide you is your mistakes. And while we all make them; we should know that it is okay and learn from them!  As for me, I have always wanted to have a business of my own and thus I started small, grew on my own terms, learned from my mistakes and I am happy to now be an experienced professional in the design industry.

  • What is the plan ahead for VDesi in terms of growth, investment, new products, etc?

We are an experimentative brand and believe in evolving all the time! We started off with women’s wear solely and gradually started catering to kid’s wear too! We recently have branched into Men’s wear and are loving it!

As for other products, we also offer hand crafted jewelry that is sourced from various jewelry designers and plans to introduce other accessories like belts, bags and juttis to mention a few. We aim to gradually enter major cities like Mumbai & Delhi.

  • Would you like to share some advice to budding start-ups or to someone that has a business idea and is contemplating it?

I would say just DO IT!’

It may not always go as planned but that’s what businesses are all about. Take that risk, stick to your ground and continue to upgrade yourself constantly. Owning your own business is a roller coaster ride that should be relished.
